Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick in Carlo Ancelotti’s first match in charge as Bayern Munich whipped Werder Bremen in the opening round of the Bundesliga season.

The champions proceeded through a staggering Xabi Alonso volley before Lewandowski struck twice.

Captain Philipp Lahm and Franck Ribery in like way netted, and Lewandowski changed over an order after Thiago was fouled.

Thomas Muller helped with three of the six goals at the Allianz Arena.

Defender Mats Hummels, who joined from Borussia Dortmund in the late spring, played the full a hour and a half, while 19-year-old midfielder Renato Sanches, a £27.5m stamping from Benfica, was an unused substitute.

Ancelotti, who acknowledged commitment taking after Pep Guardiola’s mid year flight for Manchester City, won the German Super Cup this month.
