Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has picked Per Mertesacker as club captain paying little respect to the player being out until the New Year with injury.

The veteran German centre back will miss the first four months of the season with knee injury, having experienced surgery, yet will succeed Mikel Arteta, who retired as skipper.

Wenger says he will need to experienced players Laurent Koscielny, Santi Cazorla and goalkeeper Petr Cech to take the armband in Mertesacker’s nonappearance.

“Per is an extraordinarily regarded figure in the developing zone, is esteemed too, and is in addition a significantly requesting figure,” Wenger said.

“I think it is absolutely ordinary to be him. In his nonattendance, that is the spot it will be taken by the partners. One of them will be Koscielny, in addition Cazorla and Cech maybe – the refined players.

“We will have a social illicit relationship of individuals that will deal with the importance levels and the issues of the get-together. That will be down a magnificent game plan to the capable players.”

Mertesacker, 31, joined Arsenal from Werder Bremen for £8m in 2011 and has showed up for the club.
