Southampton defender Virgil Van Djik should respect his contract with the club says Nigel Adkins.

Van Djik, who informed his manager Pelligrino of his desire to leave first received offers from Liverpool before the Southampton club complained of Liverpool’s unethical effort to sign the defender. Additionally the Netherlands international has received offer from the Premier League champions Chelsea.

“A player and a player’s representatives are always going to push to get the best deal they can, Adkins told Sky Sports at the unveiling of the new home of the English Football League – EFL House.

“He needs to be respectful of Southampton – he needs to be training and training well for them. If something does materialise, then that’s just business, that’s football, that’s life. He’s got to deal with that.”

The player is now training alone for himself in Southampton and sources closes to him admit that he would be seen as a Liverpool player before the transfer closes.

Adkins managed the Saints between 2010 and 2013 and also lead the club to the Premier League promotion.
