Former Tottenham and England striker Jermain Defoe scored only goal of the match against Crystal Palace to register Sunderland’s first away win of the season. Sunderland now move to 18th position in the league with just two wins.

A baffling challenge saw the home side appreciate a greater amount of the ownership and play, in spite of the fact that it was Sunderland’s Sebastian Coates who came nearest to discovering an opener when his second-half header was cleaned up the line.

That was until Defoe jumped on some protective perplexity including Scott Dann and Wayne Hennessey to round the goalkeeper and score victory with 10 minutes remaining. Sunderland’s triumph – simply their second in the Premier League this season – moves them up to eighteenth in the standings, one  point untied of opponents Newcastle United.
