Late Orlando Pirates and South African International goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa has been shortlisted for the 2014 CAF African Player of the Year (based in Africa) award.

Senzo Meyiwa nominated for 2014 CAF African Player of the Year

The award is given to the best player of Africa who are pursuing their football career in Africa. Meyiwa, who was the number one goalkeeper for Orlando Pirates in domestic South African League was nominated for the award along with other South African Internationals Bernard Parker and Bongani Ndulala. However, the goalkeeper is the only South African to represent his country in the final nominations.

The final nominations include Algerian Akram Djahnit who plys his trade for E.S. Setif along with his teammate and country man EL Hedi Belamieri, C.S. Sfaxien player Fakhreddine Ben Youssef from Tunisia and AS Vita’s DR COngo International Firmin Mubele Ndombe.

Meyiwa, who was excellent in 2013/14 season from both club and country could become the first player on the continent to receive the award posthumously. He led his club to the finals of the CAF Chapions League and also helped his country to qualify for the CAF AFCON, which is due to be held next year.
