Tottenham Hotspur appointed Mauricio as their Manager as soon as the season ended. What will he bring to the in-depth squad of Tottenham Hotspur which underperformed last term?
Mauricio Pochettino’s Southampton had an excellent season last term as they finished 8th in the league and scored 54 goals in the process. They accumulated 56 points with 15 wins and 11 draws in the process. His performance with the team in the pitch was very good and off the pitch he made a good relationship with the players as well. The training ground bust-up involving Pablo Osvaldo was a negative but they sent him out of first team and sent him on-loan which was a tough ask with the depth they had in attacking third. But the manager didn’t have a second thought in freezing their record signing and trusting on the youth academy graduate Sam Gallagher. As the other youth players, he delivered well for the saints when the manager came calling.
Southampton players last term were found saying that Pochettino demands their 101% in training and takes the performance in the training pitch as serious as in the match performance. ‘You need three lungs while training with him. He asks everything you have and adds up a lot in yourself as well’, said a player who wanted to be unnamed. There were rumors that Rickie Lambert left the club after Mauricio left saints and there are a lot of players to do so. And with the bigger clubs eying for new recruitment, Saints could just be the place to do so.
Spurs and Youth Academy:
Like Southampton, Tottenham also have a very good academy and handful of excellent youth products. The players who were with the club and were out on loan have a chance to flourish under the manager who believes a player can come good with age in hand. Players like Nabil Bentaleb, Andros Townsend, Harry Kane, Zeki Fryers and Milos Velijkovic have a chance to make their stronger mark. The young players who were out on loan like Tom Carroll (with QPR) and Alex Pritchard (with Swindon Town) are expected to get a chance to prove themselves in the pre-season. With the depth Pochettino has in the squad it is a tough call to say these players will get a chance but if the rumors are to be believed, there will be a huge clear out at the Lane and manager will be given transfer budget to set the team as his way.
Transfer:
Pochettino’s style of play might not fit everyone and Gaston Ramirez of Southampton is just an example to prove the word. Ramirez was considered one of the elite youth talents and was signed for club record fee but did not find himself in Pochettino’s plans as he was an attacking midfielder with attacking instinct and the manager demanded more. Similar might happen to some players in Spurs squad who are not set in the team. Players like Lewis Holtby, Benoit Assou Ekotto, Kyle Naughton will find it hard. and with the condition of players in squad there is no second though on them leaving. However, players like Paulinho, Chadli will flourish as they are just the type of player Pochettino prefers. The manager also has already said Hugo Lloris and Erik Lamela will be staying for the next season.
Spurs are said to be interested in Steven Caulker, who they sold to Cardiff last season and he could be the perfect partner for Jan Vertonghen at the back. Spurs are
