It has been some years since Liverpool had a realistic chance of winning the Premier League title but the Reds seem to be rising above all challenges that have been put in their way over recent weeks.
Much has been made about the Merseysiders inexperience in a title battle and that the fact they have not won a league title for over two decades could count against them in the long run.
Granted their rivals for the title Manchester City and Chelsea have had more recent experience of being crowned English champions but there will be plenty backing the Reds with to go all the way, and for good reason.
The way manager Brendan Rodgers has got his side playing means they can beat any side in the English top flight and it would have been interesting to see how they would have fared in the Champions League this season, as they would have given any side in Europe a run for their money.
However it might be the fact Liverpool have had no European football to deal with this season that has played into their hands this term.
While the likes of City, Chelsea and Arsenal have been battling on the continent, Rodgers’ men have just been allowed to focus on domestic issues and so far to great effect.
Liverpool do still have some challenging fixtures ahead of them before the campaign is through with City and Chelsea still to face.
However both those games are at Anfield, which has been made a fortress by Rodgers and his players this season and will be no easy place to go to for any side.
Having seen off Sunderland 2-1 in midweek, it’s not just the big games Liverpool are getting up for.
With all due respect to the Black Cats, most expected the hosts to come out on top in that game at Anfield and the Reds did not disappoint thanks to goals from Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge.
Rodgers was delighted with the result and believes that despite this unfamiliar pressure at the business end of the season, his side are coping with it well.
He said: “I think people looked at us and thought we would tail off.
“For us there is not the expectancy this year when you look at City, the squad they have and the money they’ve spent and Chelsea as well as they have been dominant over a number of years.
“The pressure will be there but the pressure is for ourselves. We are Liverpool, one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
That is the mind-set Rodgers’ men need to go into every game with from now until the final game of the season at home to Newcastle United.
If they can keep up their current level of performance and keep the likes of Luis Suarez, Sturridge and Gerrard fit, then the men from Merseyside will take some stopping if they are to be denied a long-awaited Premier League title.
