Wayne Rooney delineated England’s draw against Russia as “feeling like a defeat” taking after Vasili Berezutsky’s injury time equalizer.

Rooney was clearly England’s rise player in a more significant, midfield part, before being taken off by Roy Hodgson taking after 77 minutes.

At that stage, England were 1-0 up in view of Eric Dier’s astonishing free-kick yet Berezutsky’s last-gasp header denied the Three Lions a win that would have been justified on the leveling of play.

Rooney said: “[I am] baffled not to win it unmistakably. I thought we played some alright stuff, made dangers and controlled the beguilement.

“We had our chances yet that is football, you should take them. We got the goal and had the beguilement in our grip. It’s really disappointing not to win but instead there were a lot of positives and if we play like that we’ll be okay.

“The way we controlled the redirection, for such a young squad, was splendid. We had a 15-minute time traverse where we expected to settle down a bit toward the start of the second half anyway we moved beyond that and got the goal. The negative was the target we surrendered. It’s disappointing, it feels like a demolition right now yet we have to take it and continue forward.

“Preferably we’ll play a tantamount beguilement against Wales and in case we do we’ll be fine.”

Rooney felt the examination of playing in midfield was a win with Hodgson going for a front three of Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Adam Lallana.

“It worked outstandingly, we supplemented each other’s redirection well. It may have been my first preoccupation for England there anyway I’ve played there for Manchester Joined together and it worked commendably for us and the gathering.”

Concerning his substitution, Rooney declined to investigate Hodgson’s judgment, including: “That is the head’s decision, I respect it, it’s what he gets paid to do, to settle on those decisions.”
