Newcastle United failed to win yet another Tyne-Wear derby after Sunderland won the game 1-0 with Jermain Defoe’s goal.

Jermaine Defoe scores 'Goal of the Season' contender as Newcastle lose 1-0 to Sunderland

Former Portsmouth and Tottenham Hotspur forward Jermain Defoe scored a brilliant volley as Sunderland beat Newcastle by 1-0 in a League match held at Stadium of Light. This was the first ever Tyne Wear derby for newly appointed Sunderland manager Dick Advocat and he kept up the trend of winning the first tyne-wear derby as a new manager in the mackems hotseat. Gus Poyet and Paolo Di Canio also won their first Tyne Wear derby.

The game was full of yellow cards and fouls as both side looked forward for the bragging rights but Newcastle failed to take their chances and ended up in the losing side. Jermain Defoe’s left footed volley just before the end of first half settled the tie and Newcastle are yet to win a derby in last three years despite finishing higher.
