Xabi Alonso is set to miss the return leg of Champions League Round of 16 tie against Shakhtar Donetsk after getting sent off in the first leg match played at Lviv last night. Alonso was booked for second time and walked off the pitch leaving Bayern a man short and over half an hour to play in the match. The match marked Alonso’s 100th appearance in the Champions League, but the day did not turn out to be as per expectation with the team held for a goal-less draw.

Bayern will be without Xabi Alonso for the second leg but they will play Bastian Schweinsteiger as a lone CDM, the formation which have worked better rather than two defensive minded players in form of Bastian and Xabi at the same time. In case Pep Guadriola chooses to play two midfielders, Sebastian Rode will be deployed alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger in the midfield.
