It was interesting to listen to Ryan Giggs this week talking to BBC Radio 5 live about the similarities between Louis van Gaal and Sir Alex Ferguson in terms of intensity and preparation, and how Van Gaal demands the same sort of intensity in training as in a game.
“He sets standards and if you drop below them he is not happy,” Giggs said. I don’t doubt that for one minute, but he’ll have been happy enough to have seen his injury-hit team win at Arsenal last week with an inexperienced three-man backline.
They still have a long injury list but opponents Hull are in a real rut at the moment. Robin van Persie knows how they must be feeling. His recent form has been indifferent too and last weekend he had only 13 touches of the ball against his former club Arsenal.
That’s the fewest of any Manchester United player to have been on the pitch for at least 75 minutes in a single match in over a decade, and the fewest by any player in the Premier League this season. He’s scored only three goals for the club so far in the current campaign and Radamel Falcao’s imminent return from injury looks timely.
