Argentine Midfielder who also plays as a center back was excellent throughout a rather difficult period for Barcelona last term. Messi won the award three times in the last four years and Mascherano has won his first since joining the Catalan club from Liverpool. The 30-year old defensive player was one of the best for Argentina in the recently held World Cup as well.

Mascherano made 28 appearances in the League for Barcelona and nine in the UEFA Champions League. He did not have any goals or assists to his name but the defensive workload he did was enough to award him with Player of the Year.’

Mascherano was ecstatic about winning the award and thanked all the fans for voting him for this award. The award is given to the player who receives the maximum number of votes. The voting is done by key members of Catalan Media along with top club officials, including club president Kosep maria Bartomeu.

The president said that there was a debate when the names came up for voting, but when the decision was made, the response was unanimous and the prize is very well deserved. Mascherano has played six league ties and two UEFA Champions League matches this term.
