Netherlands booked their knockout stage berth with a nail biting 3-2 win over Australia.
The game began with Netherlands as favorites to win the tie but Australia said that they are not going to play it like they did against Chile, by slipping early on and chase the match throughout. Australia did just as they said and started strong against Netherlands. Despite falling behind for a Arjen Robben’s 20th minute strike, Australia leveled the match within a minute through Tim Cahill’s excellent volley. He scored 5th World Cup goal for his country and second this term.
Australia took the lead in the second half with a penalty conversion. Mile Jedinak coolly converted the penalty after Daryl Janmaat handled the ball inside the box. Robin Van Persie then came into the scene with a left footed shot inside the box which went towards the top of the goal and equalized the game. Memphis Depay, the substitute who also assisted for Van Persie’s goal scored the winner in 68th minute. His shot from outside the box brushed off Matt Ryan’s hand and into the goal to provide Netherlands all three points.
