France kick-started their 2014 World Cup campaign with a 3-0 victory over Honduras on Sunday evening to top Group E.
Karim Benzema was the star man for the French as he scored two goals and played a huge hand in the other which eventually went down as an own-goal following his assist.
The opening goal of the game came just before the half-time interval. Paul Pogba was pushed in the back in the penalty box which gave Les Bleus a spot-kick. Benzema stepped up and made no mistake to put his side in front ahead of the break to reward first goalscorer backers with Betfair.
History was then made with France’s second goal as goal-line technology had to be used to decide if it was over the line or not. Benzema’s initial shot hit the inside of the post and bounced into the path of the Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares who diverted into his own goal. Referee Sandro Meira Ricci used the technology available to him which proved the ball had crossed the line.
The Real Madrid striker put France out of sight with his second coming midway through the second half to ensure the points were safe to the delight of anyone who had backed France with Betfair.
Earlier in the evening, Switzerland came from behind to beat Ecaudor 2-1 in the same group with was a popular result with Betfair punters. Enner Valencia had put the South American side in front on 22 minutes before Admir Mehmedi came off the bench to cancel it out.
Switzerland’s winner arrived in stoppage time as Haris Seferovic coverted at the near post to snatch the victory in the game. The European side are now odds-on in the qualification market to make it into the last 16 of the competition.
