Mexico registered their first victory of the World Cup 2013 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Cameroon in Group A encounter.
Mexico started the game as favorites and they had the game on their control all over. They had first attempt on goal on 7th minute with Miguel Layun’s shot was parried by goalkeeper Itandje. Within a minute of that move, Oribe Peralta was flagged offside by the assistant and after few minutes Giovanni was again out of position in yet another attack. Cameroon tried to get back into the game with few attempts but they could not capitalize the chances they got.
Benoit Assou Ekotto’s cross was headed just over by Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Chedjou could not put the shot on target after a while. As the half neared, both the teams tried to get into the lead but failed to make an attacking attempt on goal. The teams went into the halves with unchanged scoreline.
Cameroon made a second half substitution with Dany Nounkeu replacing Djeugoe. The game though did not change its pace and Peralta got into end of Dos Santos’ pass but Itandje made a brilliant reflex save. The goal finally came after Dos Santos’ shot off Hector Herrera’s pass was parried by goalkeeper Itandje and Oribe Peralta was just in position to put Mexico in the lead.
Mexico then kept on pressing the opposition and couple of substitution to save the game from Mexico meant Cameroon had to attack even more. Song was replaced by Webo in later part of the game but it hardly matters. Javier Hernandez missed a great chance to double the lead after he failed to give Miguel Layun’s accurate cross direction into the goal after finding himself alone in the box with just the goalkeeper to beat. Mexican goalkeeper Ochoa made an excellent diving save to deny Benjamin Moukandjo an equalizer after he got his head into the end of Ekotto’s cross in first minute of injury time.
