Colombia began their World Cup campaign with a convincing 3-0 win over the 2004 Euro champions Greece. Pablo Armero scored the opener in seventh minute while Teofilo Gutierrez doubled the lead in second half and James Rodriguez put the icing on the cake in last minute of the match.
The match started well for th Colombian side who took the lead with the first shot on goal after Armero’s shot took a slight deflection off Manolas to bear Karnezis on goal. Cuadrado made the move in the wings and the ball across the field reached ARmero who swing his foot for just second goal for Colombia in 56 appearance.
Teofilo Gutierrez doubled the lead with a close range finish.
Greece also had a good chances to come back into the game but they failed to capitalise the chances. Kone was in a scoring position just minutes after conceding the first goal but he could not direct the ball on target after being caught by Samaras unmarked inside the box. Gekas also hit the cross bar with a header when the team was 2-0 behind and then was replaced by Kostas Mitroglou who forced some saves from Ospina in later stages of the match.
The game was solid from the Colombian side from attack to defense. Mario Yepes and Cristian Zapata were solid at the back along with Carlos Sanchez in the midfield. Greek side looked vulnerable in midfield as they failed to use the ball well.They also looked shaky at the back while Colombia’s attacking partnership looked better than the Greek side.
With this win Colombia registered their biggest win in the World Cup and Greece failed to win yet another opener. Colombia will now face Ivory Coast in their next Group Match while Greece will play Japan up next.
